Lizzie of Hall of Pilates on Movement, Mindfulness, and Winter Well-Being
Lizzie is redefining what it means to move with purpose. As a Pilates instructor with a dedicated following in Dorset and London, she’s built a reputation for creating classes that are as restorative as they are transformative. Her approach is refreshingly holistic—melding strength, balance, and mindfulness into each session, and leaving her clients with more than just a stronger core. With her upcoming session at our Winter Wellness event, we caught up with Lizzie to talk about her journey, the magic of Pilates, and why winter might just be the perfect season to reset your body and mind.
What inspired you to start Hall of Pilates, and how has your personal journey influenced your teaching style and philosophy?
I started practising Pilates when I was training as a dancer and knew then that one day I wanted to teach Pilates. After performing for a few years and working as a dance teacher, I brought my teaching and Pilates love together and acquired my Pilates certification. With my dance background, my classes are creative but always stay integral to the exercise aim - there always needs to be a reason why that exercise is important.
Pilates is such a versatile practice. How has it shaped your life, both personally and professionally?
It supported my body through years of dancing and I am sure that I have Pilates to thank for having managed to stay injury free through my training and performance days.
The Club Coast Winter Wellness event focuses on nurturing ourselves during the colder months. What unique benefits does Pilates offer for winter self-care?
For me Winter is all about slowing down and I love that Pilates offers that in its movement style. It's more than the physical exercise - the use of breath and using the whole body as a system in a slow, controlled way gives a meditative feel to the experience.
What can attendees expect from the session you'll be leading at Winter Wellness? Do you have a special focus or theme planned for the day?
I will guide the group through a nurturing Pilates session, involving lots of lengthening and strengthening moves.
Your work focuses on helping people find balance and strength in their lives. Can you share a moment or experience that made you feel especially proud or fulfilled in your career?
I had a client in London who used to love walking around Hampstead Heath with her husband. After sustaining a back injury she found she wasn't able to get out for her walks. Then she started Pilates and together we built up her strength and managed to get rid of her back pain. She is now walking on the heath every day again and that makes me happy that she can enjoy that again.
For someone new to Pilates, what’s the most important thing to know before stepping onto the mat for the first time?
Pilates is for EVERY body. There are so many variations to exercises so if something doesn't feel right, don't be afraid to let the teacher know and they can adapt the movement. You can take it at your own pace and that's the beauty of it.
If you could give your younger self one piece of advice about wellness or self-care, what would it be?
Slow down and do something nice for yourself every day.
